Looks like Doctor Who fans have a lot to thank Russell T. Davies for, as it turns out the BBC planned to cancel the show when David Tennant left in 2010.

Steven Moffat revealed that when David announced his intentions to leave, the Beeb considered ending the rebooted series which had, at that point, been running for five years.

But Steven added that it was former showrunner Russell who told the corporation ‘you are not allowed to end it’, which kept the show on the air for another seven years and counting.

‘David owned that role in a spectacular way, gave it an all-new cheeky sexy performance and became a national treasure,’ Steven told fans in 2014.

‘And he didn’t do it instantly, he did it over time. So the idea that Doctor Who could go on at all in the absence of David was a huge question.’
